New gestational diabetes podcast

A free podcast packed with information about Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is now available on our website.

The short and informative voice recording, produced by the diabetes dieticians, provides information about gestational diabetes, what causes it and dietary and exercise advice to help expectant mothers manage the condition.

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is diabetes that develops during pregnancy. It is usually diagnosed between 24 and 28 weeks gestation. Women with GDM do not have to have had diabetes before pregnancy and will usually recover post-pregnancy.

Dr Sankalpa Neupane, is a Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology at The Elsie Bertram Diabetes Centre.

He said: “During pregnancy your body goes through a lot of changes. One of the changes is to make more hormones and these hormones can make it difficult for your body to use insulin effectively. This is known as insulin resistance.

“To overcome insulin resistance women will start to produce more insulin, however, some women cannot make enough resulting in gestational diabetes.”
